My Father-In-Law recently moved in with us. He will be 98 this year.
Without asking, my Mother moved in with us to help care for my Father-In-Law. Even though that would be enough to earn her a Mother of the Year Award, there is one story about my Mom that I recently thought about.
When I was about 10 years old I had an early morning paper route. I had to get up at 4:30 a.m. and roll the newspapers, then wrap them with a rubberband. I’d place them in a big pack and get on my 10-speed bike and ride around the neighbor for about an hour and a half delivering papers, then come home and get ready for school.
Well, that lasted for about 2 days. On the third day, my mother got up at 4:30 with me and helped me wrap the newspapers (she was a lot faster than I was). Then she put all the newspapers in the back of our family station wagon and drove me around making illegal turns left and right so I could stand on the back bumper of the station wagon and whirl the newspapers onto the yards from the back of the car. She did this every day until I gave up my route. So, when I go above and beyond for any of my boys and they say, “Thanks, Mom, I can’t believe you did this,” I think of my Mom, and say “No biggie.”
So here’s to you Mom, for all the things I still can’t believe you did for me.
